Ilex abscondita Steyerm.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree (petit) or shrub, evergreen, 3–5 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish or reddish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.2–1.5 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.5–0.8 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 7–15 mm. Lamina obovate, oblong (1:2), 5.5–9 X, 4–6 cm, papyraceous or coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate. Apex rounded, mucronate (parfois). Apex retuse or emarginate or rounded. Margin revolute, entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed, pubescent (poils courts). Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 5–7 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse to solitary dichasium, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles pubescent (très finement). Peduncles of order 1 5–10 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 3–4 tenth from the base or 7–8 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 1–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Bracts linear-triangular, glabrous, 1 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangular, pubescent (très finement), 0.5–0.8 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4–5(–6) -merous (6?), white. Calyx glabrous or pubescent (très finement), 2–2.5 mm in diam., margin entire (parfois quelques poils). Corolla 2.5–3 mm, petals connate on, petals 20–30 % of their length. Apex margin entire.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles pubescent (très finement). Peduncles of order 1 6.5–11 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 5 tenth of the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangulate, glabrous, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous. Calyx pubescent (très finement), margin entire (parfois quelques poils), 3–3.5 mm in diam.

Fruits.— Fruit green, ovoid, 6 mm in diam., 7–9 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Venezuela (Amazonas), 1900 m, vicinity of landing pad in dense stand of bromeliads.
