Ilex acutidenticulata Steyerm.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree or shrub, evergreen, 2–8 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present or absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.2–2 cm. Stipules caducous, deltoid, 0.5 mm. Petiole glabrous, smooth surface, 5–12 mm. Lamina ovate, lanceolate (1:3), 5–11 X, 2–3.5 cm, papyraceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate to acute. Apex acute, mucronate. Apex acuminate. Acumen 0.5–1 cm. Margin revolute (finement), dentate, teeth inconspicuous. Teeth 5–6 ca., on the distal half of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 5–7(–10) pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Cymes of order 2. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 3–5 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 5–6 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 1.5–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Bracts deltoids, glabrous, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite or subopposite, deltoid, glabrous, 0.1 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, 1 mm in diam., margin entire. Corolla 1.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 10 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis equal to corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles glabrous (quelques poils microscoptiques). Peduncles of order 1 6–8 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 0–3 tenth of the base. Bracts deltoids, glabrous, 1 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids, glabrous, 0.3 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, margin entire, 1.5–2 mm in diam. Corolla 3 mm, petals free. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma capitate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit red, spherical, 4–5 mm in diam., 4–5 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Venezuela, 1200–1800 m, bords des rivières.

Flowering.— October to November.
