Ilex amazonensis Edwin

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree or shrub, evergreen, 3–8 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, reddish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0–1 cm. Stipules persistent, linear-triangular, 1.5 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 0.8–1.5 mm. Lamina elliptic to obovate, orbiculate (1:1) to oblong (1:2), 4.5–8 X, 2–4.5 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base rounded to truncate. Apex obtuse, mucronate. Apex retuse or rounded or acuminate. Acumen 0–0.3 cm. Margin revolute, entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 8–10 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 1–7 cm. Cymes of order 3. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 10–15 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 6–7 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 2–4 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 2–4 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Bracts linear-triangular, glabrous, 2 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoid, glabrous, 1 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4–5 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, 2 mm in diam., margin entire. Corolla 2.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 20 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.5–1.5 cm. Cymes of order 2. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 1–1.5 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 5–6 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 5 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 1–2 tenth of the base. Bracts linear-triangulate, pubescent, 3 mm, margin ciliate or dentate. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite or subopposite, deltoids, pubescent, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4–5 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous (quelques rares poils), margin ciliate or dentate, 2.5–3 mm in diam. Corolla 3–4 mm, petals connate on, petals 10–20 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma capitate, stigma glabrous.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Venezuela, 1900–2200 m, dry slope.

Flowering.— December.
