Ilex amygdalina Loes.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Shrub, evergreen, 2 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year rough, reddish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.3–1 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.5 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 5–8 mm. Lamina ovate to obovate, lanceolate (1:3), 4–6.5 X, 0.8–1.7 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate to acute. Apex acute, mucronate. Apex retuse or acuminate (très légèrement). Acumen 0.4–0.7 cm. Margin revolute, crenate, teeth conspicuous. Teeth 3–6 ca., over the entire length of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 5–7 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present (faiblement visible).

Inflorescences.— Thyrsoid or thyrse, homocladic, non proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 2–3 cm. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 1–4 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 0–1 tenth from the base or 6–7 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 1–1.5 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0 tenth from the base. Bracts deltoids or linear-triangular, pubescent, 0.5–2 mm, margin ciliate or dentate. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangular, pubescent, 0.5 mm, margin ciliate. Male flowers 4–5 -merous, white. Calyx pubescent, 1.5–2 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 2 mm, petals free. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis equal to corolla or shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary subglobulous or flattened, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.1–0.3 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles pubescent (poils très courts). Peduncles of order 1 3 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 0 tenth of the base. Bracts deltoids, pubescent, 1 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids, pubescent, 0.5 mm, margin ciliate. Female flowers 4–5 -merous. Calyx pubescent (poils très courts), margin ciliate or dentate (très finement), 2.5 mm in diam. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma mamillate or capitate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit spherical, 3 mm in diam., 4–5 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Peru Bolivia, 700 m, sur une plateforme rocheuse sèche.

Flowering.— September.
