Ilex andicola Loes.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree or shrub, evergreen, 2.5–22 m tall. 45 cm dbh (pour un arbre de 20m). Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish or brownish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.3–2 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.5–1 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 5–10 mm. Lamina elliptic, oblong (1:2), 4–7(–10) X, 2–4(–6) cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate to obtuse. Apex rounded to obtuse, mucronate or not mucronate. Apex rounded. Margin revolute, dentate, teeth inconspicuous. Teeth 15–40 ca., over the entire length of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 6–9 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Cymes of order 2–4. Peduncles pubescent (poils courts). Peduncles of order 1 15–25 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 8–9 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 3–6 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 1–5 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 2–2.5 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 4 2–2.5 mm. Pherophylls of order 4 at 0–1 tenth from base. Bracts deltoids (souvent pratiquement avortées), glabrous, 0.1–1 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoid, glabrous (parfois quelques poils courts), 0.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4–5 -merous, white. Calyx pubescent, 1–2 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 2 mm, petals connate on, petals 15–20 % of their length. Apex margin entire (papilleuse). Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Cymes of order 1–3. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 8–12 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 5–6 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 3–5 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 3 3–5 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth of the base. Bracts deltoids (petites, pratiquement avortées), glabrous, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids, pubescent, 0.3–0.5 mm, margin ciliate. Female flowers 4–5 -merous, white. Calyx pubescent, margin entire, 3–4 mm in diam. Corolla 3 mm, petals connate on, petals 30 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded) (papilleuse). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma mamillate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit green (immature), spherical to flattened, 4–7 mm in diam., 4–6 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Ecuador Peru Bolivia, (1600–)2700–3700 m, Végétation andine de haute montagne.

Flowering.— May (?).
