Ilex argentina Lillo

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree, 3.7–7 m tall. 20–30 cm dbh. Current year's branchlets glabrous or pubescent. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish or brownish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.1–1.2 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.7–1.4 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 7–12 mm. Lamina obovate, oblong (1:2), 3.5–8 X, 1.5–4 cm. Base cuneate or acute. Apex obtuse, not mucronate. Apex rounded or acuminate. Acumen 0.2–0.6 cm. Margin plane or revolute, crenate or dentate, teeth conspicuous. Teeth 4–7 ca., on the distal half of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed or flat (dans la partie distale du limbe), glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 4–6 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary or terminal. Thyrses axes 2–6 cm. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 6–10 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 4–6 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 2–4 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.5–0.8 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous, yellow. Calyx glabrous, 1.5–3 mm in diam., margin entire. Corolla 2.5–3 mm, petals connate on, petals 10–15 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary subglobulous or flattened, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary or terminal. Thyrses axes 0.8–6 cm. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 4–6 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 0–1 tenth of the base or 5–6 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 3–4 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth of the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangulate, glabrous, 0.4–0.6 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4–5 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, margin entire, 2–3 mm in diam. Corolla 2.5–3 mm, petals connate on, petals 10–15 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma mamillate or capitate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit spherical, 6–7 mm in diam., 6–7 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Argentina, 1400–1800 m, Bosque alto & Quebrada.

Flowering.— November or December.

Vernacular name.— Roble.
