Ilex blanchetii Loes.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Shrub (selon Loizeau 1986), evergreen, 1.5–2 m tall (selon Loizeau 1986). Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed (avec des stries longitudinales peu marquées), reddish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.2–2 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular (observable seulement sur les jeunes feuilles), 0.3 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 2–5 mm. Lamina elliptic, orbiculate (1:1), 3–7 X, 2–5.5 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base obtuse or rounded. Apex rounded or obtuse, mucronate. Apex retuse or rounded or acuminate. Acumen 0.2–0.5 cm. Margin revolute, entire. Midbrid adaxially flat or raised, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially obscure, 5–7 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.6–2 cm. Cymes of order 1–3. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 3–4 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 5–7 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 0.5–0.8 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 0.5 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Bracts deltoids (difficilement observable), glabrous, 1 mm (s'allongeant souvent pour donner des feuilles mal développées), margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoid or linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.2–0.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, 1.5–2 mm in diam., margin entire (irrégulière). Corolla 2 mm, petals connate on, petals 10–15 % of their length. Apex margin entire (papilleuse). Stamens at the anthesis equal to corolla or shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary subglobulous or flattened, glabrous.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Brazil (Bahia, près de Salvador), 0–10 m, bord de mer, dans du sable blanc.
