Ilex bolivarensis Edwin

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Shrub (grand), evergreen, 2.5–3 m tall. Current year's branchlets pubescent (poils très courts). Branchlets older than one year rough, greyish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.3–1 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.3–0.5 mm. Petiole pubescent (poils très courts), rough or grooved surface, 3–6 mm. Lamina elliptic or obovate, oblong (1:2), 2.6–3.8 X, 1.1–1.9 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base acute. Apex rounded to obtuse, mucronate. Apex retuse or rounded or acuminate. Acumen 0.1 cm. Margin revolute, entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous or pubescent on proximal half. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially obscure, 5–6 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse (probablement), proliferating (probablement).

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary (probablement). Thyrses axes 0.5 cm (probablement). Cymes of order 2–3. Male flowers 4–5 -merous. Calyx glabrous or pubescent, 3–3.5 mm in diam. (probablement), margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 3.5 mm. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla (?).

Female flowers.— Cymes of order 1. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 10–12 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 pubescent. Female flowers 4 -merous. Calyx glabrous, margin ciliate or dentate.

Fruits.— Fruit red (pourpre très foncé) or black, ovoid, 5 mm in diam., 7 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Colombia Venezuela (Amazonas, Chimanta Massif), 2150 m.
