Ilex boliviana Britton

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree (petit) or shrub, evergreen, 1–5 m tall. Current year's branchlets pubescent. Branchlets older than one year rough, brownish or reddish, glabrous or pubescent, dense short trichomes. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.2–1.2 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.5–0.7 mm. Petiole glabrous or pubescent, rough or grooved surface, 2–6 mm. Lamina elliptic, oblong (1:2), 2.5–6 X, 1.3–3 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially (à part quelques poils à la base, dans le prolongement du pétiole). Base acute to rounded. Apex rounded to acute, mucronate or not mucronate. Apex rounded to acuminate (faiblement marqué). Acumen 0.1–0.4 cm. Margin revolute (finement), dentate, teeth conspicuous. Teeth 20–30 ca., over the entire length of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed (légèrement), glabrous or pubescent on proximal half (peu de poils) or pubescent. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous (parfois quelques poils espacés). Secondary veins abaxially evident, 7–14 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Solitary dichasium.

Male flowers.— Cymes of order 2–4. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 5–23 mm (la fleur centrale avorte assez souvent, ou tombe prématurément). Pherophylls of order 1 at 8–10 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 1.5–5 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–5 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 1.5–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 4 0–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 4 at 0–1 tenth from base. Bracts deltoids. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoid, pubescent, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous (la fleur d'ordre 1, la plus susceptible de produire une mérie de 5, peut avorter systématiquement), white. Calyx pubescent (poils rares), 1.5 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 2.5–3 mm, petals connate on, petals 20–25 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis equal to corolla or shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary subglobulous or flattened, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Cymes of order 1–3. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 4–17 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 5–8 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 2–4 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–5 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 3 1.5–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0 tenth of the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids or linear-triangulate, pubescent, 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4–5 -merous, white. Calyx pubescent, margin ciliate or dentate, 2–4 mm in diam. Corolla 2–2.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 15–30 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary spherical (parfois légèrement aplati), glabrous, stigma mamillate or capitate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit spherical (beaucoup semblent être atteints par une maladie), 4–6 mm in diam., 2–5 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Peru Bolivia, (800–)1400–3000 m, "Bosque" andin de pérennes et décidues: coteaux rocheux escarpés humides, Matorral.

Flowering.— July to December.
