Ilex brasiliensis (Spreng.) Loes.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree (petit) or shrub, evergreen, 2–6 m tall. Current year's branchlets pubescent. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.2–3 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.5 mm. Petiole pubescent, smooth surface, (3–)5–8(–12) mm. Lamina elliptic to obovate, oblong (1:2), (1–)4.5–7(–11) X, (1–)2–3(–4.6) cm, coriaceous, pubescent abaxially (sur la face inférieure). Base acute to obtuse. Apex rounded to obtuse, mucronate. Apex retuse or rounded or acuminate. Acumen 0.1–0.5 cm. Margin revolute, entire (parfois de petites dents selon Giberti 1994). Midbrid adaxially impressed, pubescent. Midbrid abaxially raised, pubescent. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 5–7 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident (peu dense). Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.1–10 cm. Cymes of order 2–3. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 4–12 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 5–7 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 2–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 1–3 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 2–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Bracts linear-triangular, pubescent, 0.8 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangular, pubescent, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4–5 -merous. Calyx glabrous, 1.5–2 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 2.5–3 mm, petals connate on, petals 20–30 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis equal to corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.1–9 cm. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 4–6 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 1–4 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 1–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth of the base. Bracts linear-triangulate, pubescent, 0.8 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangulate, pubescent, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 5–6 -merous. Calyx pubescent, margin ciliate or dentate, 2–3 mm in diam. Corolla 3–3.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 15–25 % of their length. Apex margin ciliate. Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma mamillate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit red to black, spherical, 5–6 mm in diam., 5–6 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Brazil (Goiás, Minas Gerais, Paraná, S¦o Paulo) Paraguay (Paraguay oriental: centro y nordeste), 250 m, Abunda en lugares bastante húmedos: bordes de arroyos, matorrales pantanosos, bañados; mas raro en mesetas rocosas.

Flowering.— January or August to December.

Vernacular name.— Kuat~i nambí (kuat~i=Nasua narica L., mamifero; nambí=oreja.
