Ilex brevicuspis Reissek

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree, evergreen, 4–10 m tall. Current year's branchlets pubescent. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish or brownish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.2–2 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.5 mm. Petiole pubescent (poils très courts), smooth surface, (2–)6–11 mm. Lamina elliptic, oblong (1:2) to lanceolate (1:3), (1.3–)3.5–5.5(–8) X, (1–)1.5–2.5(–3.5) cm, papyraceous, glabrous abaxially. Base acute to obtuse. Apex obtuse to acute, mucronate. Apex rounded or acuminate. Acumen 0.3–0.6 cm. Margin revolute (très finement), dentate, teeth inconspicuous. Teeth 2–6 ca., on the distal half of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed to flat, glabrous or pubescent on proximal half. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous or pubescent on proximal half. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 4–7 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.2–3 cm. Cymes of order 1–3. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 5–7 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 5–6 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 2–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 2–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Bracts linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4–5 -merous, white (crème). Calyx glabrous, 1–1.5 mm in diam., margin entire. Corolla 2–2.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 15–25 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.1–8 cm. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 4–6 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 0–5 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 2–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth of the base. Bracts linear-triangulate, glabrous, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangulate, glabrous, 0.4 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4–5 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, margin entire, 1.5–2 mm in diam.

Fruits.— Fruit black, spherical, 2.5–5 mm in diam., 3–5 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Brazil (Rio de Janeiro, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul) Paraguay (oriente centro y sur) Argentina (Misiones, nordeste de Corrientes), 250 m, selva húmeda y alta, pero tambiénse da en bosquecillos marginales des esteros y en el borde de las masas boscosas.

Flowering.— October to December.

Vernacular name.— Ka'a h~u (ka'a=yerba, h~u = negro).
