Ilex bullata Cuatrec.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree or shrub, evergreen, 4–5 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous or pubescent. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, brownish, glabrous (parfois quelques rares poils). Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0–2.9 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.8–1 mm. Petiole glabrous or pubescent, smooth surface or rough or grooved surface, 2.5–5 mm. Lamina elliptic or obovate, oblong (1:2), 3.2–9 X, 1.9–4.5 cm, papyraceous or coriaceous, bullate adaxially, glabrous abaxially or pubescent abaxially (poils très courts surtout sur la face inférieure). Base cuneate or acute. Apex rounded or obtuse or acute, not mucronate. Apex acuminate. Acumen 0.1–1.3 cm. Margin revolute, crenate (rarement entière), teeth inconspicuous. Teeth 0–7 ca., over the entire length of the margin or on the distal half of the margin. Midbrid adaxially raised, glabrous or pubescent. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous or pubescent. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 4–7 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present (très fine et peu visible).

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, non proliferating.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.05–0.3 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles glabrous or pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 4–8 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 2–10 tenth of the base (parfois sur le calice). Bracts deltoids or linear-triangulate, glabrous or pubescent, 0.3–1 mm, margin entire or margin ciliate or dentate. Pherophylls of order 1 subopposite, deltoids (généralement collées contre le pédoncule), glabrous or pubescent, 0.1–0.6 mm, margin entire or margin ciliate. Female flowers 4 -merous. Calyx glabrous or pubescent, margin entire (papilleuse), 1.3–2 mm in diam. Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary ovoid or spherical, glabrous or pubescent, stigma mamillate or capitate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit ovoid or spherical or flattened, 2–3 mm in diam., 1.7–4 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Colombia (Rio San Juan) French Guyana (Sommet tabulaire, 45 km SE de Saül), 750–1500 m, Versant occidental de la cordillère occidentale en Colombie, sommet tabulaire en Guyane.

Flowering.— August (Guyane).
