Ilex buxifolia Gardner

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Evergreen. Current year's branchlets pubescent (poils très courts). Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0–3 cm. Stipules persistent, deltoid (vieux) or linear-triangular (jnes), 0.3–0.7 mm. Petiole glabrous, smooth surface, 3–4 mm. Lamina elliptic, lanceolate (1:3), 0.6–1.8 X, 0.3–0.6 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate to acute. Apex acute, mucronate. Apex acuminate. Acumen 0.05 cm. Margin revolute, entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed to flat (extrémité), glabrous. Midbrid abaxially flat to raised (extrémité), glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially obscure, 4–5 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.1–1.8 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 2–4 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 5 tenth from the base. Bracts linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous. Calyx glabrous, 2 mm in diam., margin entire. Corolla 2 mm, petals connate on, petals 10–20 % of their length. Apex margin entire.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.1–3 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 3–4 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 3–4 tenth of the base. Bracts linear-triangulate (triangulaires), glabrous, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangulate (linéaires), glabrous, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous. Calyx glabrous, margin entire, 2 mm in diam.

Fruits.— Fruit spherical, 3–3.5 mm in diam., 3–3.5 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Brazil.
