Aquifoliaceae of Neotropics

Loizeau P.-A. & G. Barriera

Ilex ciliolata Steyerm.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree (petit), evergreen, 5 m tall. Current year's branchlets pubescent (poils très courts). Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.1–1 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.5 mm. Petiole glabrous (très finement pubescent sur les jeunes feuilles), rough or grooved surface, 4–8 mm. Lamina elliptic, oblong (1:2), 4.5–6.5 X, 2–3.3 cm, papyraceous or coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base obtuse. Apex rounded or obtuse, mucronate. Apex rounded or acuminate. Acumen 0.1–0.4 cm. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 5–6 pairs. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent (présente selon Steyermark, et fine et pâle. Je ne vois rien de tel).

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 2.5–3 mm. Peduncles of order 2 2.5–6 mm. Calyx 2.5–3 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 3 mm.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.2–10 cm. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles pubescent (très finement). Peduncles of order 1 3–7 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 3–5 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 2–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth of the base. Bracts linear-triangulate, glabrous or pubescent, 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangulate, pubescent, 0.5–0.7 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4–5 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous (parfois quelques rares poils), margin entire (un laciniés), 1–1.5 mm in diam. Corolla 2–2.5 mm, petals free or connate on, petals 5–10 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary ovoid, glabrous, stigma capitate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit green, spherical, 4 mm in diam., 4 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Venezuela (Bolívar, El Pauji), 800–900 m, forest and forest edge.
