Ilex colombiana Cuatrec.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree or shrub, evergreen, 1–15 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous or pubescent. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed (apparence rugueuse due aux nombreuses cicatrices de feuilles), greyish or brownish, glabrous or pubescent, dense short trichomes. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present or absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0–0.3 cm. Stipules persistent or caducous, deltoid or linear-triangular, 0.3–1.3 mm. Petiole glabrous, smooth surface or rough or grooved surface, 0.5–1.5 mm. Lamina ovate (rarement elliptique), oblong (1:2), 0.3–0.8 X, 0.15–0.55 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially or pubescent abaxially (surtout le long de la marge et à l'extrémité des jeunes feuilles). Base obtuse or rounded or truncate. Apex acute, mucronate or not mucronate. Apex rounded. Acumen 0 cm. Margin plane or revolute (seulement à la base), entire or crenate or dentate, teeth inconspicuous or conspicuous. Teeth 0–1 ca., on the distal half of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially obscure, 2–3 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present or absent (peu nombreuse et peu visible).

Inflorescences.— Solitary dichasium.

Male flowers.— Cymes of order 1. Peduncles glabrous or pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 0.5–3.5 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 2–5 tenth from the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoid or linear-triangular, pubescent, 0.4–1 mm, margin entire or margin ciliate. Male flowers 4 -merous, white (à bord violacé). Calyx glabrous, 1.7–4.5 mm in diam., margin entire or margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 2–4 mm, petals connate on, petals 10–30 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary subglobulous or flattened, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Cymes of order 1. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 0.8–1.5 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 1–2 tenth of the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids or linear-triangulate, pubescent, margin ciliate. Female flowers 4 -merous, white (violacé à l'extérieur). Calyx glabrous, margin ciliate or dentate, 3–4.5 mm in diam. Corolla 3–4.5 mm, petals free. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma capitate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit green, spherical or flattened, 4–6.5 mm in diam., 3–6.5 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Colombia (Alto del Duende), 3000–3600 m, Páramo, sommet de colline, versant occidental.
