Ilex cowanii Wurdack

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree, evergreen, 18 m tall. Current year's branchlets pubescent. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, brownish, pubescent, dense short trichomes. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.4–1.3 cm. Stipules persistent, linear-triangular, 0.9–1.1 mm. Petiole pubescent, rough or grooved surface, 5–9 mm. Lamina elliptic, oblong (1:2), 3.2–5.8 X, 1.3–3.8 cm, papyraceous, glabrous abaxially. Base acute or obtuse or rounded. Apex rounded or obtuse, mucronate or not mucronate. Apex emarginate or acuminate. Acumen 0–3 cm. Margin revolute, crenate, teeth inconspicuous. Teeth 13–19 ca., over the entire length of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, pubescent. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 7–13 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Solitary dichasium.

Male flowers.— Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 6–12 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 3–6 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 3.5–4 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 1–3 tenth from the base. Bracts linear-triangular, pubescent, 1.8 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite or subopposite, deltoid, pubescent, 0.5–1.1 mm, margin ciliate. Male flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx pubescent, 3.5–4.5 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 3–4.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 20–35 % of their length. Apex margin entire.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Venezuela, 1800 m.
