Ilex crassifolioides Loes.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree (petit) or shrub, evergreen, 3–6 m tall. Current year's branchlets pubescent (poils très courts). Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, brownish, pubescent, dense short trichomes (poils très courts). Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.5–1.7 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 1.3 mm. Petiole glabrous or pubescent (jeunes feuilles), rough or grooved surface, 7–15 mm. Lamina elliptic to obovate, oblong (1:2), 6.5–9 X, 4–6.5 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate to rounded. Apex rounded, mucronate. Apex rounded. Margin plane, crenate or dentate, teeth inconspicuous. Teeth 8–10 ca., over the entire length of the margin. Midbrid adaxially raised, pubescent (poils très courts invisibles à l'oeil nu). Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous (à part quelques poils rares et courts). Secondary veins abaxially evident, 8–11 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.5–0.7 cm. Cymes of order 3–4. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 3–10 mm (fleur d'ordre 1 absente). Pherophylls of order 1 at 10 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 2–5 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 7–8 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 1–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 2–5 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 4 1 mm. Pherophylls of order 4 at 0–5 tenth from base. Bracts deltoids, pubescent, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoid or linear-triangular, pubescent, 0.5–1.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx pubescent, 1.5–1.8 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 2 mm, petals connate on, petals 20 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla (probablement). Rudimentary ovary pyramidal or subglobulous or flattened, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.3–2 cm. Cymes of order 4–5. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 3–10 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 6–8 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 2–5 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 7–8 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 3 2–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 3–5 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 4 2–2.5 mm. Pherophylls of order 4 at 0–2 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 5 0–1 mm. Pherophylls of order 5 at 0 tenth of the base. Bracts deltoids, pubescent, 1–3 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids, pubescent, 1–1.5 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx pubescent, margin ciliate or dentate, 1–2 mm in diam. Corolla 2.5–3 mm, petals connate on, petals 20 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded) (papilleuse). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma crested or columnar, stigma glabrous.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Peru, 1600–3300 m, Campos limpos, steppe à graminées?.

Flowering.— July to August.
