Ilex daphnoides Reissek

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree or shrub, evergreen. Current year's branchlets pubescent (poils très courts). Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.1–1.5 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.5–0.7 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 6–11 mm. Lamina ovate or obovate, oblong (1:2), 4–7.5 X, 1–2.5 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base acute. Apex acute, mucronate. Apex retuse or rounded. Margin revolute, entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 5–8 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating (?).

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 1–2.5 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 0.5 mm. Female flowers 4 -merous. Calyx pubescent, margin ciliate or dentate, 2–2.5 mm in diam. Corolla 2–3 mm, petals free (selon Loesener 1901). Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Ovary ovoid, glabrous, stigma mamillate, stigma glabrous.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Brazil.
