Ilex dioica (Vahl) Griseb.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree, evergreen, 20 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.4–4.1 cm. Stipules caducous, deltoid, 1.5–2.2 mm. Petiole glabrous, smooth surface or rough or grooved surface, 5–13 mm. Lamina elliptic or obovate, oblong (1:2), 5–9.5 X, 3.3–5.4 cm, papyraceous, glabrous abaxially. Base obtuse or rounded. Apex rounded or obtuse, not mucronate. Apex rounded or acuminate. Acumen 0–0.5 cm. Margin plane or revolute, crenate, teeth inconspicuous. Teeth 10–25 ca., over the entire length of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed or raised, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 5–9(–12) pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Male flowers.— Cymes of order 2. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 2.3–6.7 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 4–8 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 0.2–1.2 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–3 tenth from the base. Bracts deltoids or linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.7–2.2 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite or subopposite, deltoid or linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.1–0.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous, of another color than white, yellow or green (couleur crème). Calyx glabrous, 1.4–2.3 mm in diam., margin entire. Corolla 2–3 mm, petals free. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis equal to corolla or shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary subglobulous or flattened, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Cymes of order 1. Peduncles glabrous. Pherophylls of order 1 at 3–4 tenth of the base. Bracts deltoids or linear-triangulate, glabrous, 1–1.8 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 subopposite, deltoids, glabrous, 0.1–0.5 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous. Calyx glabrous, margin entire, 1.7–2.1 mm in diam.

Fruits.— Fruit spherical, 1.8–3 mm in diam., 2–3.1 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— The Antilles, Windward Islands.
