Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree (petit) or shrub, evergreen, 1–8 m tall. Current year's branchlets pubescent (poils très courts). Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish or brownish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.2–2 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.5 mm. Petiole pubescent (poils rares et très courts), smooth surface, 1–5(–9) mm. Lamina elliptic to obovate, oblong (1:2) to lanceolate (1:3), (1–)3–5(–8) X, (0.6–)1–2(–2.8) cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate to acute. Apex acute, mucronate. Apex emarginate or rounded. Margin revolute, crenate to dentate, teeth conspicuous. Teeth 6–12 ca., over the entire length of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous or pubescent on proximal half. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially obscure, 5–9 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 1–15 cm. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles pubescent (poils très courts). Peduncles of order 1 2–10 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 4–7 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 2–4 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Bracts deltoids, glabrous, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4–5 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, 1–2 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate (très finement, visible à la loupe). Corolla 2.5–3 mm, petals connate on, petals 15–25 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary subglobulous or flattened, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 1–15 cm. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles pubescent (poils très courts). Peduncles of order 1 4–9 mm. Calyx glabrous, margin ciliate or dentate (très finement, visible à la loupe), 2–2.5 mm in diam. Corolla 2.5–3 mm, petals connate on, petals 15–25 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma capitate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit spherical, 4–7 mm in diam., 4–7 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Brazil (Minas Gerais, S¦o Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do sul) Paraguay (oriental) Uruguay (douteux), 250 m, En Paraguay habita lugares pantanosos, ya sea en campos o en selva húmeda. Frecuente en riberas de arroyos.

Flowering.— September to December.

Vernacular name.— Apere'a ka'a (apere'a = Cavia aperea L., roedor; ka'a = yerba); ka'a mir~i (mir~i=pequeño).
