Ilex ericoides Loes.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Subshrub, evergreen. Current year's branchlets hirsute. Branchlets older than one year rough, brownish, glabrous (écorce à l'aspect de "pustule"). Lenticels on current year's branchlets impossibles à observer à cause des poils qui recouvrent les rameaux et qui empêchent d'apprécier ce caractère. Internodes 0.1–0.5 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 1 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 1–2 mm. Lamina elliptic, orbiculate (1:1) to oblong (1:2), 0.5–1.3 X, 0.4–0.7 cm, papyraceous or coriaceous, glabrous abaxially or pubescent abaxially (quelques poils rares sur certains jeunes rameaux). Base obtuse. Apex rounded to obtuse, mucronate. Apex rounded. Margin rolled up, dentate, teeth inconspicuous. Teeth 5–6 ca., over the entire length of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, pubescent. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 4–5 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Solitary dichasium.

Female flowers.— Cymes of order 1. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 1–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 4–6 tenth of the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangulate, glabrous, 1 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous. Calyx pubescent, margin ciliate or dentate, 2.5–3 mm in diam. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma mamillate.

Fruits.— Fruit spherical, 3.5 mm in diam., 4 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Peru.
