Ilex flosparva Cuatrec.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree (parfois liane), evergreen, 10–15 m tall. 30 cm dbh. Current year's branchlets glabrous or pubescent. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish or brownish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present or absent or hardly visible (petites et peu visibles). Internodes 0.1–3.2 cm. Stipules persistent or caducous, deltoid or linear-triangular, 0.4–2.3 mm. Petiole glabrous or pubescent (rarement glabre), rough or grooved surface (lisse chez les jeunes feuilles), 2–5 mm. Lamina elliptic or obovate (rarement elliptique), oblong (1:2), 4.5–14 X, 2.5–7.1 cm, papyraceous or coriaceous, bullate adaxially (légèrement), glabrous abaxially or pubescent abaxially (face supérieure de certaines feuilles de l'année). Base cuneate or acute or obtuse (rarement obtuse). Apex rounded or obtuse, not mucronate. Apex acuminate or cuspidate. Acumen 0.2–1.8 cm. Margin plane or revolute, entire or crenate (mais sinueuse), teeth inconspicuous. Teeth 8–16 ca., over the entire length of the margin or on the distal half of the margin. Midbrid adaxially raised, glabrous or pubescent on proximal half or pubescent. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous or pubescent on proximal half (quelques poils). Secondary veins abaxially evident, 4–9 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.1–0.35 cm. Cymes of order 1–3. Peduncles glabrous or pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 1.5–5 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 7–9 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 0.1–1.5 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 2–8 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 0.1–0.6 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 1–5 tenth from the base. Bracts deltoids or linear-triangular, pubescent, 0.5–1.2 mm, margin entire or margin ciliate or dentate. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite or subopposite, deltoid or linear-triangular, pubescent, 0.2–0.7 mm, margin entire or margin ciliate. Male flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous or pubescent, 0.5–1.8 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 0.8–1.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 10–20 % of their length. Apex margin entire (papilleuse). Stamens at the anthesis equal to corolla or shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal or subglobulous or flattened, glabrous or pubescent (poils très courts).

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.1–0.2 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 1–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 2–8 tenth of the base. Bracts deltoids or linear-triangulate, pubescent, 0.7–1.6 mm, margin entire or margin ciliate or dentate. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite or subopposite, deltoids, glabrous or pubescent, 0.1–0.4 mm, margin entire or margin ciliate. Female flowers 4 -merous. Calyx pubescent, margin ciliate or dentate, 1.2–1.9 mm in diam. Corolla 1–1.6 mm. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary ovoid, glabrous, stigma mamillate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit green or of another color than red, black or green (violet ou marron), ovoid or spherical, 1.5–2.5 mm in diam., 1.5–2.5 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Colombia (Rio Calima), 5–100 m, forêt primaire, forêt tropicale humide à pluvieuse.
