Ilex friburgensis Loes.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Evergreen. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.3–1 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular (triangulaires), 0.5 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 8–18 mm. Lamina elliptic to obovate, oblong (1:2), 3–7 X, 2–4 cm, papyraceous to coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate to obtuse. Apex rounded, mucronate. Apex rounded. Margin revolute, entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 6–8 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.2–6 cm. Cymes of order 2–4. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 8–13 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 5–8 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 2–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 2–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 4 2–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 4 at 0–1 tenth from base. Bracts linear-triangular (linéaires), glabrous, 1 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangular (triangulaires), glabrous, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4–5 -merous. Calyx glabrous, 2–2.5 mm in diam., margin entire. Corolla 2.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 10–20 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis equal to corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, glabrous.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Brazil.
