Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree, evergreen, 10–30 m tall. 35–60 cm dbh (35, pour un arbre de 30 m). Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, brownish or reddish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present (ou rares). Internodes 0.1–2 cm. Stipules caducous, deltoid or linear-triangular, 0.1–0.5 mm. Petiole glabrous, smooth surface or rough or grooved surface, 10–30 mm. Lamina elliptic, orbiculate (1:1) to oblong (1:2), 6–18 X, 4–9 cm, papyraceous or coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base acute to rounded. Apex rounded to obtuse, mucronate or not mucronate. Apex emarginate or acuminate. Acumen 0.2–1 cm. Margin revolute, entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 5–12 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly present (très petits points à peine visibles à l'oeil nu).

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.5–1.6 cm. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 4–6 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 5 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 2–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Bracts deltoids, glabrous, 1–1.5 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoid, glabrous, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 5 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, 2–2.5 mm in diam., margin entire. Corolla 2–2.5 mm, petals free. Apex margin entire. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 1.5–4 cm (lorsque non proliférants). Cymes of order 1. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 6–20 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 0–7 tenth of the base. Bracts deltoids, glabrous, 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids or linear-triangulate, glabrous, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 5–6 -merous, green. Calyx glabrous, margin entire or margin ciliate or dentate, 2.5–4 mm in diam. Corolla 3–4 mm, petals free (peut-être soudés juste à la base). Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary ovoid or spherical, glabrous, stigma mamillate or capitate or columnar, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit red or black or of another color than red, black or green (jaune), spherical, 9–15 mm in diam., 9–15 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Ecuador Peru, 100–1100 m, Forêt dense humide sempervirente, Fdh andine sempervirente: Varillal, Forêt primaire, Collines sur sol de sable rouge.

Flowering.— November.
