Ilex glaucophylla Steyerm.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Shrub, evergreen, 2.5–3 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, reddish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.2–2 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.3–0.5 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 15–20 mm. Lamina ovate or elliptic or obovate, oblong (1:2), 8–11 X, 3–6.5 cm, papyraceous to coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate to acute. Apex rounded to obtuse, mucronate. Apex emarginate or acuminate. Acumen 0.3–0.5 cm. Margin revolute, entire ("obscure denticulatis aliter integerrimis" selon Steyermark). Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 7–8 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Cymes of order 3–4. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 6–15 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 8–9 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 1.5–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 1–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 4 0.5–1 mm. Pherophylls of order 4 at 0–1 tenth from base. Bracts linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.5–0.7 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4–5 -merous, white ("cremosa"). Calyx glabrous, 2.5–3 mm in diam., margin entire. Corolla 2.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 40–50 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Venezuela (Miranda, Baruta), 1200 m, strate arbustive en forêt des nuages.

Flowering.— April or June.
