Ilex gotardensis Loizeau & Spichiger

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Shrub, evergreen, 2–3 m tall. Current year's branchlets hirsute. Branchlets older than one year rough, greyish or reddish, glabrous. Internodes 0.1–0.7 cm. Stipules caducous, deltoid (difficilement visibles parmi les poils), 0.5–1 mm. Petiole glabrous (à part quelques poils), rough or grooved surface, 3–5 mm. Lamina elliptic, oblong (1:2) to lanceolate (1:3), 1.5–2.7 X, 0.7–1.1 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate to acute. Apex acute, mucronate. Apex acuminate (très finement, comme aristé). Acumen 0.05–0.1 cm. Margin revolute, dentate, teeth inconspicuous. Teeth 1–3 ca., on the distal half of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, pubescent on proximal half (surtout sur les jeunes feuilles). Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 4–6 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, non proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.05–0.1 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 1–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 4–6 tenth from the base. Bracts linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoid, glabrous, 0.5–0.7 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, 1–1.5 mm in diam., margin entire. Corolla 2 mm, petals connate on, petals 15–20 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary subglobulous or flattened, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.1–0.2 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 1–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 5–7 tenth of the base. Bracts deltoids, glabrous, 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids, glabrous, 0.4–0.6 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, margin entire, 1.5–2 mm in diam. Corolla 2 mm, petals connate on, petals 20–25 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary ovoid, glabrous, stigma capitate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit green (immature), spherical, 3–4 mm in diam., 3–4 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Peru, 2500–3000 m, Campos limpos, Puna: Pajonal, sur sol rocheux, climat de brouillard et de pluie.

Flowering.— January to February or December.
