Ilex gransabanensis Steyerm.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Shrub, evergreen, 1–3 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, reddish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.5–1 cm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 9–13 mm. Lamina elliptic, oblong (1:2), 5–10 X, 3.5–5 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base acute to obtuse. Apex rounded to obtuse, not mucronate. Apex emarginate or rounded or acuminate. Acumen 0.1 cm. Margin revolute, entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed (mais légèrement surélevée) or flat, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially obscure, 6–9 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present (petits points peu marqués).

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.5–2 cm. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 6–8 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 2–5 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 2–5 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth of the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids, glabrous, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous, white (verdâtres). Calyx pubescent (finement), margin ciliate or dentate, 2–3 mm in diam.

Fruits.— Fruit green, spherical, 6 mm in diam., 6 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Venezuela (Bolívar: near Canaima, base of Cerro Guaiquinima, near Ikabarú), 400–800 m, Gallery forests, shrublands on sandstone.
