Ilex guaiquinimae Steyerm.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree, evergreen, 8–9 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.3–1.3 cm. Stipules caducous, deltoid, 0.1 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 10–18 mm. Lamina elliptic, oblong (1:2), 10–16 X, 6.5–8 cm, papyraceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate or acute or obtuse. Apex rounded or obtuse, not mucronate. Apex emarginate or rounded. Margin revolute, entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 6–8 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent (présente selon Steyermark 1988).

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes issued from several axillary buds and terminal. Thyrses axes 0.5–4 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 3–6 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 4–5 tenth of the base. Bracts linear-triangulate, 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids, glabrous, 0.3–0.4 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous. Calyx glabrous, margin entire, 3.5–4 mm in diam. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma mamillate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit spherical, 5–6 mm in diam., 5–6 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Venezuela (Bolívar, Cerro Guaiquiníma), 730–900 m, lomas bosqueadas.
