Ilex guianensis (Aubl.) Kuntze

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree or shrub, evergreen, 2.5–20 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous or pubescent. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish or brownish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.2–2.5 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.4–1 mm. Petiole glabrous, smooth surface or rough or grooved surface (chez les jeunes feuilles), 3–9 mm. Lamina elliptic or obovate (légèrement), oblong (1:2) or lanceolate (1:3), 2.5–8.5 X, 1.2–3.7 cm, papyraceous or coriaceous (chez les jeunes feuilles), glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate or acute. Apex rounded or obtuse or acute (rarement arrondi), mucronate or not mucronate. Apex emarginate or rounded or acuminate. Acumen 0–0.5 cm. Margin revolute, entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 6–10 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly present or absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, non proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.1–0.25 cm. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles glabrous or pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 0.7–8 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 5–9 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 0.1–1.5 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–2 tenth from the base. Bracts deltoids, glabrous or pubescent, 0.5–1.8 mm, margin entire or margin ciliate or dentate. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite or subopposite, deltoid, glabrous or pubescent, 0.4–0.8 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4–5 -merous (rarement 5), white. Calyx glabrous, 1.5–2.5 mm in diam., margin entire or margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 2–3 mm, petals connate on, petals 10–20 % of their length. Apex margin entire (irrégulière à dentée). Stamens at the anthesis equal to corolla. Rudimentary ovary subglobulous or flattened, pubescent (poils minuscules).

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.1–0.2 cm. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 1.5–6 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 1–4 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 1.5–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth of the base. Bracts deltoids or linear-triangulate, glabrous or pubescent, 0.5–1.3 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite or subopposite, deltoids, glabrous or pubescent, 0.3–0.7 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4–5 -merous (rarement 5), white. Calyx glabrous or pubescent (quelques poils), margin entire or margin ciliate or dentate, 1.5–2.2 mm in diam. Corolla 1.3–2 mm, petals free. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded) or ciliate (cils minuscules). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma mamillate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit red or black, ovoid, 2.5–4.5 mm in diam., 3–5 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— Central America or South America, Panama, Colombia, 500–1000 m, Commun dans les matorrales côtiers et les savannes, sur la côte Atlantique (selon Hahn 1999).

Flowering.— October to December or January to April (selon Hahn 1999).
