Ilex harrisii Loes.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree, 5–8 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish or reddish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.5–1 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.3–0.5 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 5–13 mm. Lamina elliptic, oblong (1:2), 5–9 X, 2–4.5 cm, papyraceous. Base cuneate or acute or obtuse. Apex obtuse, mucronate. Apex acuminate. Acumen 3–7 cm. Margin revolute, entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 6–8 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, non proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.05–0.1 cm. Cymes of order 2. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 5–7 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 6–8 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 2 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Bracts deltoids, glabrous, 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.5–0.8 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous. Calyx glabrous, 1–1.5 mm in diam., margin entire. Rudimentary ovary subglobulous or flattened, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 1–2 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 4–6 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 5 tenth of the base. Bracts linear-triangulate, glabrous, 0.8–1 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangulate, glabrous, 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, margin entire, 1.5–2 mm in diam. Corolla 1.5–2 mm, petals connate on, petals 15–20 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes ovate, glabrous. Ovary ovoid, glabrous, stigma mamillate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit ovoid, 3–4 mm in diam., 4–5 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— The Antilles, Jamaica, 1300–1500 m, Mist forest with Podocarpus.

Flowering.— February or March.
