Ilex herzogii Loes.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree or shrub, evergreen, 8 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed or rough, greyish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present or absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.2–1 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 1 mm. Petiole glabrous, smooth surface, 7–16 mm. Lamina elliptic to obovate, oblong (1:2), 3.5–6.5 X, 2–3.5 cm, papyraceous or coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate to obtuse (décurrente). Apex rounded to acute, not mucronate. Apex retuse or acuminate. Acumen 0.2–0.5 cm. Margin revolute, crenate or dentate, teeth inconspicuous or conspicuous. Teeth 5–11 ca., over the entire length of the margin or on the distal half of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed or flat, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 5–7 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly present or absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse or solitary dichasium, proliferating.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles pubescent (poils très courts). Peduncles of order 1 3–15 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 2–3 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 2.5–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth of the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids, glabrous (peut-être quelques poils), 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4–5 -merous. Calyx glabrous, margin entire, 2–5 mm in diam. Ovary glabrous, stigma mamillate.

Fruits.— Fruit red (rouge-violet à violet), spherical, 4–9 mm in diam., 4–8 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Bolivia (Cord. de Sta-Cruz, Cerro Bravo), 1500–2600 m, In der Buschregion, Bosque nublado con Blepharocalyx salicifolus, varios Weinmannia, Orenopanax, Prumnopitys exigua, Podocarpus rusbyi, Dicksonia... Suelos con mucho humus.
