Ilex hippocrateoides Kunth

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree (petit), evergreen, 3–8 m tall. 6–13 cm dbh. Current year's branchlets glabrous (parfois avec des poils très courts). Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, reddish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.5–1.5 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.5–1 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 3–12 mm. Lamina elliptic (légèrement obovale), oblong (1:2), 3.5–10 X, 2–5 cm, papyraceous or coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base obtuse to rounded. Apex obtuse, not mucronate. Apex rounded or acuminate. Acumen 0.1–0.7 cm. Margin revolute (finement), crenate to dentate, teeth inconspicuous. Teeth 20–40 ca., over the entire length of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous (rares poils épars). Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 7–16 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly present (absentes d'après protologue).

Inflorescences.— Solitary dichasium.

Male flowers.— Cymes of order 2–3. Peduncles glabrous (à part quelques poils très courts). Peduncles of order 1 10–16 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 7–8 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 1.5–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth from the base or 3–4 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 0.5–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoid or linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.5–0.7 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous. Calyx glabrous, 2–2.5 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate (poils très courts de 1/10 de mm au plus). Apex margin entire. Rudimentary ovary subglobulous or flattened, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Cymes of order 2–4. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 10–17 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 7–9 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 3–7 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 5–8 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 3 1–4 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–5 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 4 2 mm. Pherophylls of order 4 at 0–2 tenth of the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangulate, glabrous or pubescent, 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous (parfois avec quelques poils), margin entire or margin ciliate or dentate, 2–4 mm in diam. Corolla 2.5–3 mm, petals connate on, petals 10 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma mamillate or capitate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit green (immature), spherical, 3–4 mm in diam., 3–4 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Peru, 2000–3000(–4600) m, "Bosque" andin de pérennes et décidues: forêt primaire de montagne (dominée par Dictyocaryum).

Flowering.— April to September.
