Ilex huachamacariana Edwin

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree or shrub, evergreen, 4–10 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, reddish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0–1 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.2 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 3–5 mm. Lamina elliptic to obovate, oblong (1:2), 3–4.5 X, 1–2.5 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate to obtuse. Apex rounded, mucronate. Apex retuse or rounded. Margin revolute, entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed, pubescent (visible à la loupe). Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially obscure, 4–5 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 1–12 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 6–8 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 2–3 tenth from the base. Bracts linear-triangular, pubescent, 2 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite or subopposite, deltoid, glabrous, 0.3 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 5 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, 2–3 mm in diam., margin entire. Corolla 3 mm, petals connate on, petals 10 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis equal to corolla. Rudimentary ovary subglobulous or flattened, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 3–11 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 1.5–2.5 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 2–3 tenth of the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids, glabrous, 0.3 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 5 -merous. Calyx glabrous, margin entire, 3 mm in diam. Stigma capitate.

Fruits.— Fruit spherical, 6 mm in diam., 6 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Venezuela, 1800 m, scrub forest.

Flowering.— December.
