Ilex imbricata Rusby

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree (petit) or shrub, evergreen, 3–4 m tall. Current year's branchlets pubescent (gros poils épais et relativement peu nombreux). Branchlets older than one year rough, greyish, glabrous or pubescent, sparse trichomes (restes de poils). Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.1–0.3 cm. Stipules persistent, linear-triangular, 0.5 mm. Petiole glabrous, smooth surface, 3 mm. Lamina elliptic, orbiculate (1:1), 1–1.5 X, 0.8–1 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially (parfois quelques poils dessous). Base obtuse to rounded. Apex rounded to obtuse, mucronate. Apex rounded. Margin revolute (peu marquée), dentate, teeth inconspicuous. Teeth 3–4 ca., on the distal half of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous or pubescent on proximal half or pubescent (généralement glabre, mais parfois quelques gros poils). Secondary veins abaxially evident, 4–5 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Solitary dichasium.

Male flowers.— Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 2–11 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 5 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 3–4 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0 tenth from the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoid, glabrous, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous, yellow (plut"t rose). Calyx pubescent, 1.5–2.5 mm in diam., margin entire (parfois quelques gros poils sur la marge). Corolla 1.5–2 mm, petals connate on, petals 20–30 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 2–7 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 2–6 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 2 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth of the base. Pherophylls of order 1 linear-triangulate, 0.6 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous. Calyx pubescent, margin entire (parfois quelques gros poils sur la marge), 2–2.5 mm in diam. Corolla 2–2.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 20–30 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma capitate (mammiforme en fruit), stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit spherical, 3–4 mm in diam., 3–4 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Peru Bolivia, 3300–3500 m, Végétation andine de haute montagne: Puna basse avec mosaïque de forêts des nuages. Bords de rivières. Tahuampa.

Flowering.— July to November.
