Ilex inundata Reissek

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree, evergreen, 3–20 m tall (le plus souvent 5–10). 10 cm dbh (pour 8 m de hauteur). Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish or reddish, glabrous or pubescent, sparse trichomes. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 1–3 cm. Stipules caducous, deltoid or linear-triangular, 0.2–0.5 mm. Petiole glabrous, smooth surface, 8–14 mm. Lamina ovate to obovate, oblong (1:2), 6–15 X, 3–6.5 cm, papyraceous (souvent déformé), glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate to obtuse. Apex obtuse to acute, mucronate. Apex retuse or acuminate. Acumen 0.7–1.5 cm. Margin revolute (finement), entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 7–11 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.1–0.4 cm. Cymes of order 2–4. Peduncles pubescent (poils courts et rares). Peduncles of order 1 8–14 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 7–8 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 0.5–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–3 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 0.5–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 4 0–1 mm. Pherophylls of order 4 at 0 tenth from base. Bracts deltoids, pubescent, 0.5–0.7 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoid, pubescent, 0.2–0.4 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous (parfois quelques rares poils), 1–1.5 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 1–2 mm, petals free or connate on, petals 10–20 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis equal to corolla. Rudimentary ovary subglobulous or flattened, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.1–0.2 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles pubescent (peu de poils, courts, surtout à la base du pédoncule). Peduncles of order 1 4–10 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 2–4 tenth of the base. Bracts deltoids or linear-triangulate, glabrous or pubescent, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids or linear-triangulate, pubescent, 0.3–0.5 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous (à part quelques rares poils), margin entire (sauf quelques rares poils), 2–2.5 mm in diam. Corolla 2.5–3 mm, petals free or connate on, petals 10–20 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary ovoid, glabrous, stigma capitate or columnar, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit black, spherical, 5–6 mm in diam., 5–6 mm (sans le stigmate).

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Colombia Ecuador Peru Brazil Bolivia, (90–)100–400(–700) m, Forêt dense humide sempervirente: forêt inondable. Tahuampa.

Flowering.— January or September to December (jusqu'en mai? ou toute l'année?).

Vernacular name.— "Palometa huayo", "Yanahuayo" (selon Ayala 721) (Pérou).
