Ilex jaramillana Cuatrec.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Shrub, evergreen, 1.5–6 m tall. 10 cm dbh. Current year's branchlets pubescent. Branchlets older than one year rough, greyish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.1–1.2 cm. Stipules persistent, deltoid, 1–1.5 mm. Petiole glabrous or pubescent, rough or grooved surface, 2–4 mm. Lamina elliptic, oblong (1:2), 4–9 X, 2.5–5.5 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially or pubescent abaxially. Base rounded or cordate. Apex rounded or obtuse, not mucronate. Apex rounded. Margin plane, crenate, teeth inconspicuous. Teeth 10–12 ca., over the entire length of the margin. Midbrid adaxially flat or raised, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, pubescent. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 8–12 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Solitary dichasium.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles glabrous or pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 5–10 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 7–9 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 1–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth of the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangulate, pubescent, 1–3 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 5–6 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous or pubescent, margin entire, 7–9 mm in diam. Corolla 7–7.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 25–30 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma mamillate or crested, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit spherical, 12–14 mm in diam., 12–14 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Colombia (Boyacá), 3000–3400 m, Forêt sclérophylle (Quercetum lindenii).

Flowering.— August.

Vernacular name.— Carniasado.
