Ilex jauaensis Steyerm.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree, evergreen, 4 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year rough, reddish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.3–1.5 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.5 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 4–6 mm. Lamina elliptic or obovate, oblong (1:2), 4–5.5 X, 2–3 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base obtuse or rounded. Apex rounded or obtuse. Apex retuse. Margin revolute, entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially obscure, 4–6 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 3–12 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 12–16 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 0–3 tenth of the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids, glabrous, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous. Calyx glabrous, margin entire, 3–4 mm in diam.

Fruits.— Fruit red, spherical, 7–8(–10) mm in diam., 6–7(–9) mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Venezuela (Bolívar, Meseta de Jaua), 1750–1800 m, forêt-galerie.
