Ilex jelskii Zahlbr.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Evergreen. Current year's branchlets pubescent. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, reddish, pubescent, sparse trichomes. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.8–1.5 cm. Stipules caducous, deltoid or linear-triangular (avec une base très large), 0.5 mm. Petiole pubescent, smooth surface, 8–13 mm. Lamina ovate to elliptic, oblong (1:2), 5.5–8 X, 2–3.5 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially or pubescent abaxially (jeunes feuilles). Base obtuse to rounded. Apex obtuse, mucronate. Apex acuminate. Acumen 0.3–0.5 cm. Margin revolute, entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed, pubescent. Midbrid abaxially raised, pubescent. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 9–10 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.2–0.5 cm. Cymes of order 1–3. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 8–18 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 5–9 tenth of the base (souvent la bifurcation des fleurs d'ordre 2 se fait bien au dessus des préfeuilles). Peduncles of order 2 2–6 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–2 tenth of the base or 5–7 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 3 2–4 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth of the base. Bracts deltoids, pubescent, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite or subopposite, deltoids, pubescent, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous. Calyx pubescent, margin ciliate or dentate, 2–2.5 mm in diam. Corolla 2–2.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 10–25 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary ovoid, pubescent (hispide), stigma capitate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit ovoid (selon ZAHLBRUCKNER in SZYSZYLOWICZ 1894).

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Peru.

Flowering.— August.
