Ilex jenmanii Loes.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree or shrub, evergreen, 10 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.2–2 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.5–1 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 11–21 mm. Lamina elliptic to obovate, oblong (1:2), 9–14 X, 4–8 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base attenuate or cuneate or acute. Apex obtuse or acute, not mucronate. Apex retuse (rarement) or acuminate. Acumen 0.3–1 cm. Margin revolute, entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 7–10 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.3–0.7 cm. Cymes of order 4–5. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 18–21 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 9 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 1–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 4–5 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 1–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–3 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 4 1–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 4 at 0–3 tenth from base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoid, glabrous, 1 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous. Calyx glabrous, 2 mm in diam., margin entire. Corolla 2 mm, petals connate on, petals 5–10 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.5–5 cm. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 9–13 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 8–9 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 2–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth of the base. Bracts linear-triangulate, glabrous, 1–1.5 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids or linear-triangulate, glabrous, 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous. Calyx glabrous, margin ciliate or dentate (courtement ciliés), 3–4 mm in diam. Corolla 2–3 mm, petals connate on, petals 5–10 % of their length (?). Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma mamillate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit green or of another color than red, black or green (blanc), spherical, 4–5 mm in diam., 4–5 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Venezuela (Bolívar: common from Altiplanicie de Nuria and Río Botanamo south to Roraima-tepui and west to Río Caura) British Guyana Brazil (Roraima), 100–1400 m, Riparian, semideciduous, and seasonally dry evergreen forests bordering savannas, sandy and alluvial soils, or areas of sandstone rock.
