Ilex karstenii Loes.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Evergreen. Current year's branchlets glabrous (quelques poils épars, surtout sur les parties les plus jeunes). Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.3–3 cm. Stipules persistent or caducous, deltoid or linear-triangular, 0.5–1 mm. Petiole pubescent, smooth surface, 9–13 mm. Lamina elliptic or obovate, oblong (1:2), 7–12 X, 3.5–5 cm, papyraceous (à subcoriace), glabrous abaxially (poils parfois étoilés). Base acute or obtuse. Apex obtuse, mucronate (souvent). Apex rounded or acuminate. Acumen 0–0.8 cm. Margin plane (mais avec un fin bourrelet), dentate, teeth inconspicuous. Teeth 15–45 ca., over the entire length of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous or pubescent. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 7–11 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Solitary dichasium.

Female flowers.— Cymes of order 1–3. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 13–18 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 8 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 1.5–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 3 1.5–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth of the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangulate, pubescent, 0.3–1 mm, margin ciliate. Female flowers 5–6 -merous. Calyx pubescent, margin ciliate or dentate, 4–5 mm in diam. (en fruit). Stigma mamillate, glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit spherical, 3–4 mm in diam., 3–4 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Colombia (Popayan).
