Ilex karuaiana Steyerm.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree, evergreen, 8–13 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish or reddish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.4–2 cm. Stipules caducous, deltoid or linear-triangular, 0.3–0.5 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 5–7 mm. Lamina ovate or elliptic, oblong (1:2) or lanceolate (1:3), 5–9 X, 1.4–4 cm, papyraceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate or acute. Apex obtuse or acute, mucronate. Apex acuminate or cuspidate. Acumen 1–1.5 cm. Margin plane or revolute, dentate, teeth inconspicuous. Teeth 10–12 ca., over the entire length of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially obscure, 4–6 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present or absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse or solitary dichasium, non proliferating or proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary or terminal. Thyrses axes 8–15 cm. Cymes of order 3–4. Peduncles pubescent (finement). Peduncles of order 1 10–20 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 7–8 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 2–5 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 4–6 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 2–2.5 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Bracts linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.5–0.8 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, 2.5–3 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 2–2.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 30–40 % of their length. Rudimentary ovary subglobulous or flattened, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Peduncles of order 1 8–15 mm.

Fruits.— Fruit spherical, 4.5 mm in diam., 4.5 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Venezuela (Bolívar, Ptari-tepuí; Cordilheira Paracaima), 1065–1220 m, forêt dense, pente boisée. Mata de terra firme muito argilosa.

Flowering.— September to November.

Vernacular name.— Tarebi-yek.
