Ilex kleinii Edwin

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Shrub, evergreen, 6 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed (lisses), greyish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.2–0.7 cm. Stipules persistent, deltoid or linear-triangular (linéaires), 0.3 mm. Petiole glabrous, smooth surface, 6–11 mm. Lamina elliptic, oblong (1:2), 1–4 X, 0.8–2.2 cm, papyraceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate to acute. Apex acute, mucronate. Apex acuminate. Acumen 0.3–0.4 cm. Margin revolute, dentate, teeth conspicuous. Teeth 6–10 ca., over the entire length of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 5–7 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 2–8 cm. Cymes of order 1–3. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 10–28 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 5–7 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 5–8 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 2–5 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 3–4 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Bracts deltoids, glabrous, 0.2–0.3 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangular (linéaires), glabrous, 0.3–0.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous. Calyx glabrous, 1 mm in diam., margin entire. Corolla 1 mm, petals connate on, petals 10–20 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, glabrous.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Brazil (Santa Catarina), Forêt.
