Ilex kunthiana Triana

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree or shrub or subshrub (petit), evergreen, 1–9 m tall. Current year's branchlets pubescent. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish or brownish or reddish, glabrous or pubescent, sparse trichomes or dense short trichomes. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present or absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0–0.9 cm. Stipules persistent or caducous, deltoid or linear-triangular, 0.2–0.8 mm. Petiole pubescent, smooth surface or rough or grooved surface, 1.5–4 mm. Lamina ovate or elliptic or obovate (rarement ovale), orbiculate (1:1) or oblong (1:2), 0.6–3.3 X, 0.4–2.4 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate or acute or obtuse. Apex rounded or obtuse or acute (rarement aigu), mucronate or not mucronate. Apex rounded. Margin revolute, crenate or dentate, teeth conspicuous. Teeth 1–11 ca., over the entire length of the margin or on the distal half of the margin. Midbrid adaxially flat (parfois très légèrement imprimée ou proéminente à la base), glabrous or pubescent on proximal half (rarement glabre). Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous or pubescent on proximal half. Secondary veins abaxially evident or obscure, 2–7 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident or obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present or absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, non proliferating or proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.1–0.2 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 1–6 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 1–7 tenth from the base. Bracts deltoids or linear-triangular, pubescent, 0.5–3 mm, margin entire or margin ciliate or dentate. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoid or linear-triangular, pubescent, 0.3–1.3 mm, margin entire or margin ciliate. Male flowers 4 -merous, white or of another color than white, yellow or green (blanc-verdâtre ou rose a l'apex des pétales). Calyx pubescent (parfois seulement quelques poils), 1.3–2.5 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 1.5–2.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 5–10 % of their length. Apex margin entire or ciliate. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary subglobulous or flattened, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.1–0.2 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 0.5–6 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 1–6 tenth of the base. Bracts deltoids or linear-triangulate, pubescent, 0.4–2 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids or linear-triangulate, pubescent, 0.2–0.7 mm, margin entire or margin ciliate. Female flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx pubescent, margin ciliate or dentate, 2–3 mm in diam. Corolla 1.8–3 mm, petals connate on, petals 25–35 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded) or ciliate. Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma capitate or columnar, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit red or green, spherical, 2–5 mm in diam., 2.5–5.5 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Colombia, 1990–3770 m, Páramo.
