Ilex lamprophylla Standl.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree, evergreen, 5–15 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous or pubescent (finement). Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, brownish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.1–1.7 cm. Stipules persistent or caducous, linear-triangular, 0.5–0.8 mm. Petiole glabrous, smooth surface, 3–8 mm. Lamina elliptic, oblong (1:2), 3–9 X, 2–5.5 cm, papyraceous, glabrous abaxially. Base acute or obtuse or cordate. Apex obtuse or acute, not mucronate. Apex rounded or acuminate. Acumen 0.1–1.5 cm. Margin revolute, crenate or dentate, teeth conspicuous. Teeth 7–16 ca., over the entire length of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 6–8 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, non proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0–0.5 cm. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles glabrous or pubescent (poils très courts et espacés). Peduncles of order 1 8–12 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 4–6 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 4–6 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, 3–4 mm in diam., margin entire. Corolla 2–3.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 10–15 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0–0.5 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 4–8 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 1–3 tenth of the base. Bracts linear-triangulate, glabrous, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids, glabrous, 0.3–0.5 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, margin entire, 1.5–2 mm in diam. Corolla 2–2.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 10–15 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary ovoid, glabrous, stigma capitate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit red or black, ovoid, 3–5 mm in diam., 4–6 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— Central America, El Salvador or Nicaragua or Costa Rica or Panama, 1200–1500 m, localement commun, en forêt.

Flowering.— January or February or March or September or October or November or December.
