Ilex laureola Triana

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree, evergreen, 8–30 m tall. 18–35 cm dbh (pour respectivement 23 et 30 m de hauteur). Current year's branchlets glabrous (à part quelques rares poils courts). Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, brownish or reddish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present (parfois en forme de pustules sans ouverture). Internodes 0.2–5 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.2–0.3 mm (0.8 selon LOESENER 1901). Petiole glabrous (jeunes feuilles avec des poils rares et très courts), smooth surface or rough or grooved surface, 5–22 mm. Lamina ovate to obovate, oblong (1:2) to lanceolate (1:3), 5.5–18(–20) X, 2.5–6.5(–7.5) cm, papyraceous or coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate to obtuse. Apex rounded to acute, mucronate or not mucronate. Apex rounded or acuminate. Acumen 0.3–1.8(–2.5) cm. Margin revolute (finement), crenate or dentate, teeth inconspicuous. Teeth (7–)10–20 ca., over the entire length of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous (à part quelques rares poils épars). Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident or obscure, 5–10 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident or obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present (parfois très fine).

Inflorescences.— Thyrsoid, heterocladic, with subthyrsoids alternate.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 3–11 cm. Cymes of order 2–3(–5). Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 2–15 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 6–10 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 1–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 2–5 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 1–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–2 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 4 1–1.5 mm. Pherophylls of order 4 at 0–2 tenth from base. Peduncles of order 5 1 mm. Pherophylls of order 5 at 0–2 tenth from the base. Bracts deltoids or linear-triangular, glabrous or pubescent, 0.5–1.5 mm, margin entire or margin ciliate or dentate. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoid, glabrous or pubescent, 0.3–1 mm, margin entire or margin ciliate. Male flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous or pubescent, 1–2 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 1.5–2.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 20–25 % of their length. Apex margin entire or ciliate. Stamens at the anthesis equal to corolla to shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary subglobulous or flattened, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 2–9 cm. Cymes of order 1–3. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 1.5–8 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 6–8 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 1.5–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 3 1.5–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth of the base. Bracts deltoids or linear-triangulate, pubescent, 0.4–1 mm, margin entire or margin ciliate or dentate. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids, pubescent, 0.2–0.5 mm, margin ciliate. Female flowers 4 -merous (les fleurs terminant l'axe principal du thyrsoïde peuvent aller de 4 à 6), yellow (d'après Lehmann s.n. blanc-rose) or green. Calyx glabrous or pubescent, margin ciliate or dentate, 2–2.5 mm in diam. Corolla 2–2.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 20–30 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded) (papilleuse) or ciliate. Staminodes sagittate or ovate, glabrous. Ovary ovoid to spherical, glabrous, stigma mamillate or capitate, stigma glabrous (Palacios 1479 à stigmates poilus ?).

Fruits.— Fruit spherical, 2 mm in diam., 2–2.5 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Colombia British Guyana Ecuador Peru Brazil, 100–1600 m, Forêt dense humides sempervirente et Fdh andine sempervirente: forêt en bordure de la meseta, savane haute (Colombie), forêt dense humide prémontagnarde (Equateur), forêt dense humide (sacha aguajal, Pérou).

Flowering.— February to August (pour le Pérou uniquement).
