Ilex liesneri Steyerm.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Shrub, evergreen, 1.5–2 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, brownish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.2–1 cm. Stipules caducous, deltoid, 0.1–0.3 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 5–12 mm. Lamina elliptic, lanceolate (1:3), 3–7 X, 0.8–1.6 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate. Apex acute, mucronate. Apex acuminate. Acumen 0.1–1 cm. Margin revolute, dentate, teeth conspicuous. Teeth 8–14 ca., over the entire length of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially obscure, 4–7 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.8–5 cm. Cymes of order 2–3. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 8–18 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 6–7 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 7–8 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 5 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 3–5 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 1–2 tenth from the base. Bracts deltoids, glabrous, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.3 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, 1–1.2 mm in diam., margin entire. Corolla 0.5–1 mm, petals free or connate on, petals 5–10 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 3–7 cm. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 10–12 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 4–6 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 5–6 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth of the base. Bracts linear-triangulate, glabrous, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangulate, glabrous, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous. Calyx glabrous, margin entire, 2–3 mm in diam.

Fruits.— Fruit green, spherical, 5–7 mm in diam., 5–7 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Venezuela, 1100–1200 m, forested slopes, medium height forest.

Flowering.— March or October.
