Ilex longipetiolata Loes.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree or shrub. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, reddish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.3–3 cm. Stipules caducous, 0.8–1 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 25–40 mm. Lamina elliptic, oblong (1:2), 5–10 X, 2.5–5 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base obtuse or rounded. Apex rounded or obtuse, not mucronate. Apex emarginate or rounded or acuminate. Acumen 0.4–1 cm. Margin revolute, entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 5–7 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes issued from several axillary buds. Thyrses axes 0.2–0.3 cm (lorsqu'il s'agit de thyrses non proliférantes). Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 5–10 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 7–8 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 1–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Bracts linear-triangular, glabrous, 1–1.5 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 5–6 -merous. Calyx glabrous, 2–3 mm in diam., margin entire. Corolla 3–4 mm, petals connate on, petals 10–20 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.3–0.4 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 5–7 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 4–6 tenth of the base. Bracts deltoids, glabrous, 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangulate, glabrous, 0.5–0.7 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 5–6 -merous. Calyx glabrous, margin entire, 4–5 mm in diam. (mesuré sur le fruit).

Fruits.— Fruit spherical, 7–8 mm in diam., 7–8 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Brazil (Rio de Janeiro).

Flowering.— November.
