Ilex longipilosa Steyerm.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Shrub, evergreen, 1.5 m tall. Current year's branchlets hirsute (poils jusqu'à 0.5 mm de long). Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, reddish, pubescent (?), dense long trichomes (?). Internodes 0.2–1.5 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.3–0.5 mm. Petiole pubescent, 3–7 mm. Lamina elliptic to obovate, orbiculate (1:1) to oblong (1:2), 4–7 X, 2.5–5.5 cm, coriaceous, pubescent abaxially. Base cuneate to acute. Apex rounded, mucronate. Apex emarginate or acuminate. Acumen 0.1 cm. Margin revolute, entire or dentate (parfois quelques dents selon Steyermark 1988), teeth inconspicuous. Teeth 1–2 ca., on the distal half of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, pubescent. Midbrid abaxially raised, pubescent. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 5–8 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly present (relativement difficile à voir).

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 3–8 cm. Cymes of order 2–3. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 4–9 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 6–8 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 1.5–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 1.5–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Bracts linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, 1.5–2 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 2.5–3 mm, petals free or connate on, petals 5–10 % of their length (par le filet des étamines). Apex margin entire (un peu laciniée). Stamens at the anthesis equal to corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 3–8 cm. Cymes of order 2–3. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 4–9 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 6–8 tenth of the base. Distribution, ecology.— South America, Venezuela (Bolívar, El Pauji), 800–1050 m, pente sud dépourvue de forêt.

Flowering.— November.
