Ilex loretoica Loes. in litt.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Shrub, evergreen, 3 m tall. Branchlets older than one year reddish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.5–3.5 cm. Stipules caducous. Petiole 2–6 mm. Lamina elliptic, oblong (1:2), 12–18.5 X, 5–9 cm, coriaceous. Base obtuse. Apex rounded to obtuse. Margin crenate, teeth inconspicuous. Midbrid adaxially impressed or flat or raised. Midbrid abaxially raised. Secondary veins 9–12 pairs. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, non proliferating.

Male flowers.— Cymes of order 2. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 9–16 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 8–9 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 1–2 mm. Bracts 0.3 mm. Male flowers 4 -merous. Calyx glabrous, 2.5–3 mm in diam. Corolla 3.5 mm, petals free or connate on, petals 15–20 % of their length. Stamens at the anthesis equal to corolla. Rudimentary ovary subglobulous or flattened, glabrous.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Peru (Loreto: Moyabamba), 1500–1600 m, Forêt dense humide andine sempervirente.
