Ilex macarenensis Cuatrec.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree or shrub (petit a grand), evergreen, 4–20 m tall. 15 cm dbh (pour 12 m de hauteur). Current year's branchlets glabrous or pubescent (quelques poils très petits). Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish or reddish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.1–2.1 cm. Stipules caducous, deltoid or linear-triangular, 0.3–0.7 mm. Petiole glabrous, smooth surface, 5–13 mm. Lamina elliptic or obovate, oblong (1:2), 3.5–9.5 X, 1.5–3.5 cm, papyraceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate or acute. Apex obtuse or acute, mucronate or not mucronate. Apex acuminate. Acumen 0.3–1.5 cm. Margin plane or revolute (finement a la base), entire or dentate, teeth inconspicuous. Teeth 0–2 ca., on the distal half of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 5–11 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent (rarement présente et dans ce cas peu nombreuse et très peu visible).

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary or terminal. Cymes of order 2–3. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 9–16 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 7–8 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 3–5 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–2 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 3 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Bracts linear-triangular, glabrous, 1–2 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoid, glabrous, 0.3–0.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, 1.8–2.5 mm in diam. Corolla 2–3 mm, petals free. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis longer than corolla or equal to corolla. Rudimentary ovary subpear-shaped, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary or terminal. Thyrses axes 0.1–0.2 cm. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles glabrous or pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 3–12 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 1–5 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 3–4 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth of the base. Bracts deltoids or linear-triangulate, glabrous or pubescent, 0.1–3 mm, margin entire or margin ciliate or dentate. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite or subopposite, deltoids or linear-triangulate, glabrous or pubescent, 0.2–0.7 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4–5 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous (quelques poils), margin entire (irrégulière), 2–3 mm in diam. Corolla 2.5–3 mm, petals free. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma capitate or columnar, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit black (brun foncé), spherical, 6–7 mm in diam., 6–7 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Colombia (Pico Renjifo: La Macarena) Venezuela (Falcón) Ecuador (Pastaza), 650–1900 m, Forêt dense humide à proximité d'un sommet. Forêt primaire.

Flowering.— March or November or December.

Vernacular name.— Araguan (Vénézuela: Falcón).
